The EU fertilizers industry delivers

The EU fertilizer industry has the capacity to supply nitrogen fertilizers to EU farmers.

In 2022, the EU-27 consumed 16 Mt of nutrients, 9.5 Mt of which were nitrogen fertilizers.

The EU’s production capacity stands at around 14.8 Mt.

Imports have historically met 32% of nutrient demand.

European fertilizers have a much lower environmental footprint than Russian fertilizers. EU ammonium nitrate-based fertilizers emit around 50-60% less greenhouse gases than Russian-made ones. If EU farmers become more dependent on Russian imports, European agriculture will struggle to decarbonise.

The influx of carbon-intensive Russian fertilizers into the EU threatens the EU fertilizer sector’s competitiveness and its ability to finance green investments needed to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
